Fixed Points of the Restricted Delaunay Triangulation Operator

چکیده
The restricted Delaunay triangulation can be conceived as an operator that takes as input a k-manifold (typically smooth) embedded in R and a set of points sampled with sufficient density on that manifold, and produces as output a k-dimensional triangulation of the manifold, the input points serving as its vertices. What happens if we feed that triangulation back into the operator, replacing the original manifold, while retaining the same set of input points? If k = 2 and the sample points are sufficiently dense, we obtain another triangulation of the manifold. Iterating this process, we soon reach an iteration for which the input and output triangulations are the same. We call this triangulation a fixed point of the restricted Delaunay triangulation operator. With this observation, and a new test for distinguishing “critical points” near the manifold from those near its medial axis, we develop a provably good surface reconstruction algorithm for R3 with unusually modest sampling requirements. We develop a similar algorithm for constructing a simplicial complex that models a 2-manifold embedded in a high-dimensional space R, also with modest sampling requirements (especially compared to algorithms that depend on sliver exudation). The latter algorithm builds a non-manifold representation similar to the flow complex, but made solely of Delaunay simplices. The algorithm avoids the curse of dimensionality: its running time is polynomial, not exponential, in d. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.2.2 Analysis of Algorithms and Problem Complexity: Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems

Fun with Restricted Delaunay Triangulations
The restricted Delaunay triangulation is a subcomplex of the three-dimensional Delaunay triangulation that serves as a triangulation of a smooth surface embedded in three-dimensional space. It has proven itself as a mathematically powerful tool for surface meshing and surface reconstruction. I discuss two fascinating mathematical twists on these structures. First, I address a question of Bruno ...
متن کاملDelaunay Triangulation of Imprecise Points Simplified and Extended
Suppose we want to compute the Delaunay triangulation of a set P whose points are restricted to a collectionR of input regions known in advance. Building on recent work by Löffler and Snoeyink [21], we show how to leverage our knowledge of R for faster Delaunay computation. Our approach needs no fancy machinery and optimally handles a wide variety of inputs, eg, overlapping disks of different s...
متن کاملConstructing Intrinsic Delaunay Triangulations of Submanifolds
We describe an algorithm to construct an intrinsic Delaunay triangulation of a smooth closed submanifold of Euclidean space. Using results established in a companion paper on the stability of Delaunay triangulations on δ-generic point sets, we establish sampling criteria which ensure that the intrinsic Delaunay complex coincides with the restricted Delaunay complex and also with the recently in...
متن کاملRestricted Constrained Delaunay Triangulations
We introduce the restricted constrained Delaunay triangulation (restricted CDT). The restricted CDT generalizes the restricted Delaunay triangulation, allowing us to define a triangulation of a surface that includes a set of constraining segments. Under certain sampling conditions, the restricted CDT includes every constrained segment and suggests an algorithm that produces a triangulation of t...
متن کاملA faster circle-sweep Delaunay triangulation algorithm
This paper presents a new way to compute the Delaunay triangulation of a planar set P of n points, using sweep-circle technique combined with the standard recursive edge-flipping. The algorithm sweeps the plane by an increasing circle whose center is a fixed point in the convex hull of P . Empirical results and comparisons show that it reduces the number of in-circle tests and edge-flips, and i...
